Principal Advisor, Investment Programmes, Ministry for Primary Industries, NZ 

2013-2018

  • Helped industry across a range of primary sectors develop applications and business cases for the former Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) Fund.

  • A Tier 4 government position, within the Directorate Leadership Team.

  • Worked on a range of pan-sector or government-wide initiatives.

    Some examples:

Strategic thinking around disruptive and emerging trends in the food and fibre sector

  • Developing and facilitating workshops with industry leaders, using future foresight techniques to develop scenarios and associated strategies.

Social Licence to Operate

  • Commissioned research and held workshops with the aquaculture industry.

  • Issued practical guidance to the aquaculture industry on how to improve their social licence to operate.

  • Shared findings with a range of external companies from across NZ’s primary sector.

Opotiki Harbour Redevelopment Project

  • Worked with MBIE, Treasury, regional and district councils, local Iwi and local industry on a $56M regional economic development project in Opotiki, which, at the time, was journeying through Treasury’s Better Business Case process.

Ocean Acidification NZ-USA Bi-lateral Workshop

  • Organised and sourced funding for a knowledge-transfer workshop on ocean acidification and shellfish aquaculture (with a range of partner organisations, including NIWA and Cawthron and the US Embassy).

  • USA based growers and scientists shared their adaptive practices with the NZ industry.

  • Selected to be featured at the US Secretary of State’s International Oceans Meeting as an example of best practice.


Project Manager, Wilts and Berks Canal Partnership, United Kingdom

Retained Consultant: 2004 - 2007

  • Scoped and delivered a programme for the restoration of an historic 60-mile canal line in Wiltshire and Berkshire, which offered significant economic, environmental and community benefits.

  • One of two people managing a multi-disciplinary team developing a £15M Business Case, which included liaison with Local Authorities, The Environment Agency, British Waterways, the South West of England Development Agency, English Nature, and multiple landowners. 


City Centre Manager, The Bath City Centre Management Partnership, United Kingdom

1997 - 2001 // Three direct staff reports

  • Manager of a private/public sector partnership charged with improving the economic viability of Bath City Centre for its retail and business tenants, whilst managing the conflicts generated by over 200,000 tourists per annum.

  • Developed investment-ready projects and secured corporate sponsorship and other funding.


Urban Design Manager, BGCC Urban Regeneration Company, Brick Lane, London

1995 - 1997 // Two direct staff reports.

  • BGCC managed £40M of central government and European Union urban regeneration funding.

  • Managed a multi-million £ CAPEX budget, reporting to a board of public, private and community stakeholders.

  • Assessed applications to regeneration and conservation architecture funds that the company managed.

  • Developed ‘grass roots’ engagement programmes in a severely deprived area of inner London which experienced significant racial tensions, to deliver sustainable and comprehensive regeneration.


C.L.A.W.S. Community Architects, London

1992 - 1995

  • Team member of the leading community planning practice in London, working on London high-rise housing estates (population 1000-5000), earmarked for demolition due to their ‘deprivation indicators.’

  • Worked with residents to facilitate their genuine participation in the design of their replacement housing and community facilities.

  • Projects were contentious and highly political, robust interpersonal skills and an ability to build relationships with people from a range of backgrounds were essential.
